Kid entertainment makes people mad
I have a quick moment here, since the Sprout is watching Caillou. This is a cute, educational — and sickeningly innoffensive — PBS cartoon I found via Netflix online “Watch Instantly” feature. The Sprout finds Caillou very entertaining.
I had never heard of it, so I went to the Wikipedia entry to read more. Believe it or not, the Caillou post is locked against editing because of so many controversial additions and deletions being made.
From the discussion page I see that some people think Caillou is inappropriate for children because Caillou models “whiny” behavior. (He gets upset, which kids do, and then describes why he’s upset to his parents.) Some people also think Caillou has cancer because he’s bald.
Since then I’ve seen a lot of extraordinary angry commentary about Caillou; people claiming it’s damaging to children, parents with violent fantasies about Caillou. I just can’t get it.
If something like Caillou is inappropriate for children, I wonder what people will think of us letting the Sprout watch the Muppets.

Over the years watched some fine kid entertainment with our children…Doug, Duck Tales, The Simpsons, Terminator..all quality children’s programming. It might explain some of El Jay’s recent viewing choices….
He is also way too color coordinated. What kid wears matching shoes?! I smell trouble.
There are probably simpler reasons.
I didn’t know they had DVDs! We have the "No" CD which we haven’t listened to in awhile. Right now his favorites are Muppets from Space and the Wallace and Grommit shorts & movie.
Get some of They Might Be Giants DVD/CDs… Here Come the ABCs, and Here Come the 123s. Since kids end up wanting to watch the same stuff over and over again… its good to have them addicted to stuff that you, as the parent, are willing to watch and/or listen to over and over again!
Haven’t been able to get my kids to watch the Muppets. I’ve tried but failed. However, I was very successful with Wallace and Gromit. They loved the Wallace and Gromit Wererabbit movie that came out three or so years ago.
But yes, DEFINITELY go get the TMBG DVDs that I mentioned… they absolutely rock!
