Life Inc

The Sprout is in his terrible twos (“terrific twos,” I’m apparently supposed to call them), which means I don’t get nearly as much blogging time as I’d like. He wants to type on the computer, too, you see. So I either have to let him, type with him yelling at me, or give it up until he’s asleep. He does let me read more, though. Probably more than I have in years.

Right now I’m reading Douglas Rushkoff’s new book Life, Inc. Rushkoff says we’ve been taught to act and think like mini-corporations ourselves. For example, after getting mugged in his own neighborhood he was castigated by his neighbors for talking about it — he might give the neighborhood a bad name and drive down property values, you see.

Rushkoff doesn’t think much of the “treat yourself like a corporation” strategy, as you can probably guess. Which is interesting to me, since I’ve also been reading The Passionate Programmer, which encourages you to think of yourself as a business with your skills as your primary product.

While that makes good business sense, I suppose, I’ve been wondering where that leaves the rest of me. I get the sense Rushkoff wonders where that leaves the rest of all of us. And I certainly hope he has some solutions.
