The Dark Knight: Where is the Joy?
I saw the Dark Knight several months ago with a good friend of mine. It’s a fantastic movie. Not a great deal of fun, perhaps. A bit of a downer. Nihilistic. Pessimistic. Still very well done.
Something has been bugging me about it for a long time and I think I’ve put my finger on it. It’s that damn batmobile. It’s an amazing toy with dozens of surprises, and yet Batman drives the thing like it’s a 2005 Camry and he’s stuck in traffic. No apparent excitement, no apparent joy. I realize that Batman is supposed to be stoic and grim. And yes, he’s been through a lot lately. Still. How could you drive that thing and not blast Bad to the Bone?
That’s one of the reasons I liked Iron Man better. Stark takes a geek’s joy in his tools.

I was expecting the dark knight to be much better than it was and favored batman begins over it and Of course iron man was much better
I just watched TDK again the other night, and I liked it better than the first time. It’s definitely a downer though. And yeah, Iron Man kicked ass.
Let’s not forget that in the first movie Batman was clearly pumping Bad to the Bone in the Batmobile – and countless police officers were crushed to their death in their squad cars as a result.
I watched The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight, and Iron Man all in one weekend. I have to say that Iron Man was the best of all 3. I had really hoped that TDK was going to be exceptional but I thought it was far too long and had too much stuffed into it. I thought Hulk didn’t have a sturdy enough plot and didn’t make enough use of Norton, who does excellent angst and it was wasted. Iron Man was an excellent vision of a man’s journey of redemption and even though it had it’s dark angsty bits, it was great fun too.
