Typography

Date November 2, 2006

Inspired by a recent sideblog entry on Ish about the importance of typography online and aided by a resource on the subject that speaks my language, I’ve refreshed the design of Thudfactor somewhat. I haven’t done all that much with the design elements, but I’ve tried to pay close attention to the text treatments.

I’m sure there’s still more to be done; if you have a suggestion, please share it in the comments.

Typography is one of my fav subjects. I went to about 4 sessions on newspaper/magazine typography at the ACP/CMA conference last week and got some really great tips.

The best part is seeing what other colleges/national newspapers are up to.

I like the new layout of Thudfactor. Good stuff.

Thanks, J. I really didn’t change all that much — I moved from fluid to fixed width and then paid very close attention to the typography.

I like the new look — just curious, though, why does the active paragraph turn blue when you hover over it?

I don’t know if other people find that distracting or not, but I tend to mark my place reading with my pointer. And I find the highlighting helps me keep track of where I am in the text. As much as I read on-screen, I actually find it a bit difficult.

OK, makes sense. It’s subtle enough that it doesn’t bother me, I was just wondering what it was for. Thanks!

Now to get to work on my own redesign… ah, someday.
