Friday 10: The Morning After Blues
The morning after blues, from my head down to my shoes
Edit: Make sure to check out Glen's Friday 10!
Last week's answers are up, four folks guessed eight. Nice to break the seven streak.
I dropped out of listening to popular music for a bit, especially pop country, so imagine my surprise when I found out many years later that the guy from Hootie and the Blowfish had become a huge star thanks to a cover of an Old Crow Medicine Show song. Not only that, but OCMS's "Wagon Wheel" had become so popular to cover it's become a punchline.
The OCMS song in the set of ten, "James River Blues," is a favorite of mine because it turns the railroad song on its head. In this one, trains are the new technology destroying livelihoods, not an object of nostalgia.
"Whatever It Was" by Greg Brown is also a favorite of mine. Greg Brown's been around for ages and reminds me a bit Tom Waits, James McMurtry, and Steve Earle. I loved this song when it came out. I was in my twenties, but have since grown into the cynicism.
My generation takes what it can get. Are you surprised the kids are all upset? They're looking at nothing, nothing turns away and yawns
Enough talk! The rules:
- No searchin'
- Both song and artist, please
- Covers OK if I can find 'em
Now here's ten lyrics I found while searching through the fragments of my dream-shattered sleep.
